Beyond Earth Month: Taking Small Steps for Our Planet
Earth Month may be over, but caring for our planet is a year-round commitment! The first glimpse of a swallow darting through the early summer air is a reminder of that.
Swallow Watch
These elegant birds, with their glossy blue backs, rusty red throats, and distinctive forked tails, are a cherished symbol of summer in the UK. But swallows are more than just beautiful to watch – they're incredible feathered athletes and natural pest controllers!
Did you know they undertake a mind-boggling migration of up to 6,000 miles twice a year? They spend their summers gracing our skies, feasting on abundant flying insects.
Come autumn, as the days shorten and insects dwindle, swallows embark on their epic journey south. Soaring over France, Spain, and even the vast Sahara Desert, they eventually reach their wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa. It's a testament to their incredible resilience and navigational skills!
Beyond their graceful acrobatics, swallows are known for their loyalty to nesting sites. They often return to the same eaves or outbuildings year after year to raise their young. You might even be lucky enough to witness the parents tirelessly feeding their chicks on a summer's day.
By providing suitable nesting boxes and maintaining insect-rich gardens, we can all play a part in welcoming these summer visitors and ensuring their safe return for generations to come.
Have you spotted any swallows yet? Through the iNaturalist platform, we can observe and share these avian friends with the world, raising awareness about these graceful travellers. Let's celebrate the return of these feathered friends and the joy they bring to our summer skies!
